September 2004: French and Continental Antiques in Madison Bouckville, Antique Exotic Wood Boxes, Filigree and Internet Library Resources.

Bonjour,

I'll review our recent finds of French and Continental Antiques at the Madison Bouckville Show, a new grouping of antique exotic wood boxes and filigree objects, and the infinite amount of information available from Internet Public Library sites.

French and Continental Antiques in Madison Bouckville, NY
At the end of August, the grass fields around Hamilton NY - hometown of Colgate College - fill with tents, trucks and vans to welcome 1000 dealers and several thousand visitors to a vast 2-days “deballage” (literally: unpacking) of antiques, curiosities and collectibles of all sorts.
This was our second time there. Heavy rain had poured all night, to a point of flooding such that it was hard to move our feet out of the deep mud puddles, let alone cars that had to be drawn by tractors. One good humored dealer posted a sign reading: “ Mud Sale Here”. Nevertheless Guy and I managed to find a long and narrow French antique upholstered bench, an exquisite antique bamboo shelve and mini stool, and a superb miniature French antique candle holder resting on a three-lobed mother of pearl chiseled leaf. See our pictures and descriptions on these pages:

Antique filigree were popular at the turn of the past century (ca 1800) for jewelry and gift items, card and pill boxes, and small containers of different shapes. All designs were handcrafted with the thinnest silver threads and each antique filigree piece is unique. The finest ones are made with hair-like metallic threads that are so thin they could be part of a spider web.

Internet Public Library Resources
While answering your mails and researching the history of your family’s antiques, I found out that I could access from my home computer all resources from our local public library system. By entering my library card ID, I can use databases that otherwise are accessible by subscription only. Full text articles from magazines, publications and encyclopedias’ archives are available by simply adding your card number on your public library site. This represents an amazing amount of scholarly research and media information in all fields of interest. For example, a search with *art and antiques* on the EBSCO site produced 3276 full text articles from publications including Magazine Antiques, Architectural Digest, Antiques and Collectors Magazine, This Olde House, USA Today, NY Times, New Yorker, House and Garden, Antiques and Collecting Magazine, Woodworker’s Journal and History Today.
If you do not have a Library card, here is a good site:

Guy and I hope our September Les Nouvelles Letter was informative, and look forward to your suggestions for future topics.

Till next time,
